Join us as we begin your adventure to amazing Cano Island! You will be picked up at your Uvita or Dominical hotel and transported by van to Sierpe where we will stop and enjoy a delicious typical breakfast before heading out by boat. We will spend 45-minutes boating through one of the most biologically diverse mangrove areas in Central America. You will marvel at the wide variety of animals that you will see during this brief trip- several varieties of monkey, crocodiles, lots of bird species and many different snakes and other reptiles! Upon entering the Pacific, we will keep our eyes peeled for the many whales and dolphins that make this area part of their annual migration. This is one of the most scenic parts of Costa Rica – enjoy the spectacular views of Drake Bay and the Marenco Biological Reserve.
Once we arrive at Cano Island you will be able to snorkel for an hour or so in the beautiful clear waters surrounding the island before we break for a delicious picnic lunch. After lunch you can decide to hike the many trails that cover the island or enjoy more of the spectacular snorkeling that this area is known for. The visibility for snorkeling is often more then 65 feet and tour participants often see turtles, many varieties of fish and the dolphins and whales that make this area their home. For those that choose to hike the many trails that cross the island, there is more then enough to see! Cano Island is covered with fifty-meter tall trees in a beautiful rainforest setting and well-groomed trails that make exploration fun and easy for all abilities!
Cano Island has a wealth of archeological importance for Costa Rica and Central America. Presumed to have been a cemetery or burial ground in Pre-Columbian times, there is much to see for all guests! Most unusual is the presence of the mysterious stone spheres- perfectly rounded and completely made by hand, these spheres appear hidden in the rain forest and have baffled many as to their meaning and origin. Cano Island was believed to have been created over 50 million years ago when the tectonic plates shifted and the island emerged from under the sea. Now known for its archeological sites and spectacular underwater visibility, Cano Island has become one of the most sought after tour destinations for Costa Rican vacations in the South Pacific zone.
