Tamarindo takes its name from the tamarind trees that line the coastline around the beach. What was once a sleepy fishing village, Tamarindo is now one of the most popular beach resorts in Costa Rica, with an array of boutiques, luxury hotels and restaurants. Surfers will love the laid-back vibe to the place and beach lovers can soak up the rays on this beautiful part of the Pacific coast. The ocean is warm and the sun is hot year-round ensuring a great atmosphere for relaxation and tanning. With temperatures ranging from about 80 degrees to 100, the weather is perfect for creating some beautiful sunsets and surfing climates.
How to get there
Accessibility is a great plus for the Tamarindo area. A simple four hour drive or a very short flight from San Jose, the area is also served by its own airstrip for those who cannot wait to hit the beach. Local air companies such as Nature Air and Sansa are perfect for that quick hop. Liberia airport is a forty minute drive away and serves many international destinations. Many local companies offer reasonable shuttles and there is also a frequent bus service from San Jose and other areas for just a few dollars per person.

Tamarindo is a mecca for surfers and sport fishing lovers. In fact, fisherman come from all over the world to experience the amazing sport fishing here. People have caught record marlin, giant tuna and sailfish in Tamarindo and go back from more action each year. The surfer lifestyle is very much alive and kicking in this bustling beach town. Surfers of all skills can enjoy the waves, due to the geographical nature of the area. The town also boast the first ever surf school in Costa Rica, proving its heavyweight status as a surfer’s paradise.
