The Papagayo Area
Formed by volcanic activity, Papagayo consists a pair of jagged peninsulas that frame the beautiful Golfo de Papagayo and reach into the Pacific Ocean. The area consists of over fifteen miles of coastline, over thirty separate and distinctive beaches and miles of beautiful bluff edges. The beaches of this area range from pure white, gray, coral and black and offer visitors every activity imaginable on the shore or in the water.
The Costa Rican government made a commitment over a quarter of a century ago to preserve this very special part of the country and even today with all of the new tourist interest, over 70% of the area remains open, undeveloped space. In Papagayo you will be able to see over 400 species of animals- comical squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, and the beautifully iridescent cobalt morphos butterflies are among some of the animals and insects that you can see every day in Papagayo.
Unsurpassed beauty
Traditionally the area of Papagayo was known as a paradise for bird watchers and a special place for those looking to enjoy nature. The area has also always been a haven for those looking for relaxation and great beaches. With its near perfect weather, almost non-existent mosquito population and calm waters- Papagayo is nearly ideal in every way. In recent years, several large resorts have been built in the area bringing many new people to enjoy the area’s unsurpassed beauty. The Costa Rican government has maintained its strict standards on building and development and there is still an abundance of natural beauty to be enjoyed and seen.
