Nosara Costa Rica

Nosara is a quiet, tranquil beach community, which has become one of the oldest expatriate communities in Costa Rica.  The community of Nosara also has the honor of having passed one of the first preservation acts over twenty years ago– over half of the land in Nosara is protected forest where no logging can take place.  The ideal area for nature lovers, the amazing Nosara Biological Reserve is a gem in the Costa Rican National Park system.  The beaches of Nosara form part of the Ostional Wildlife Reserve, located just north of Nosara. This creates a 200-meter strip of beach area that creates Nosara's protected zone where no construction is allowed.  This attention to preservation has made Nosara a template for other conservationist areas.

The area of Nosara is really not a single beach, but rather a group of four different beaches, each with its own distinctive charm and features. The main beach of Nosara is Playa Guiones, a nearly 5 mile long expanse of pure white sand running directly from Punta Pelada to Punta Guiones in the south.  Playa Guiones is rated as one of the best surf spots in Costa Rica- it easy to access the beach and the surf is consistently good, with excellent breaks, both from the left and the right.  To the south of Playa Guiones is Playa Rosada, which is, deserted most of the time.  The warm tide pools and the unusual stretch of gorgeous pink sand make it a beautiful place to visit and get away from it all. The beach at Pelada is the perfect swimming location, as an offshore reef protects it.  There is an interesting blow hole which blows spray during certain tides and a series of caves- one of which houses a bat colony.  Finally, Playa Nosara is the most remote of all of the Nosara beaches.  The waves here are some of the highest in Costa Rica and mangroves fringe the black sand beaches.

The village of Nosara has a limited service airport that supports small aircraft for trips throughout Costa Rica.  The town is a fairly typical Tico town with small sodas, grocery stores and restaurants.
