Costa Ballena Aka Whale Coast

Dominical, Costa Rica, Down the coast, where the Baru River slowly plunges into the ocean, there's a beach town named Dominical after a place worthy of a Sunday. Dominical is a 2 km beach 29 miles south of Manuel Antonio in Costa Rica. It's esteemed the first beach of Costa Ballena aka Whale Coast. This warm coast and ocean water is sought by whales, turtles and other wildlife for their young. Colder South Pacific Ocean whales visit Costa Ballena July through November. Northern whales in turn come here from December to March.

Dominical Beach waves are large and meant for adept surfers; Dominicalito, the next beach south east of Dominical, is better for swimming. There are many little bars and restaurants, shops, corner stores, mini supers and hotels in Dominical. Tours near Villas by Tekoa include mangrove kayaking, whale spotting, snorkeling in Ballena Island, surfing in Dominical or splashing at Dominicalito. Further down Whale Coast, beyond Dominicalito Beach, Hermosa and Uvita Beach coincide at Uvita Point. As a natural omen, the whale tail tombolo of Uvita Point is where Ballena Marine National Park in South Pacific Costa Rica begins. Protected ocean waters and beaches worth a visit are Arco Beach, Ballena Beach, Ventanas Beach and Ballena Island.
