El Tucano Hotel is near La Marina de San Carlos, a rural land of green hills and mountain springs that flow into the plains of northern Costa Rica. This area of San Carlos is high enough to have cool nights with sunny mornings and rain is common before the sun sinks over the trees. La Marina, an hour's drive from Arenal Volcano, has the scent of local flavors and is not really part of the busy tourist scene nearby. There's a famous zoo in La Marina that's worth a visit where you can see fauna up close and learn about their likes and habits.
El Tucano Hotel is known for its thermal pools framed by rich green rainforests and wildlife notes from toucans, macaws, monkeys and frogs. This rainforest hotel gets its charm from a natural ingredient achieved by soaking the mist of thermal pools and steam huts under the trees. Guests love waking to the sounds of early morning wildlife and the prospect of hot tubs and saunas prior to spotting sloths over breakfast. Before slipping into their spa for a perfect mud bath and other perks, put on some bug spray and take a walk down the hotel's rainforest trail. Blue Morpho butterflies like to fly out of the jungle and over the hotsprings as if trying to draw your eye away from the birds and monkeys.
Rooms are basic and clean at El Tucano Hotel but due to many flights of stairs to and from the rooms, this place is not apt for impaired guests. The covered porch of a room seems like a nice retreat beneath the rain and a great place to read a book or to catch up writing post cards to your loved ones. Be sure to ask the friendly restaurant staff for a Ceviche and don't leave La Marina before having a tasty Passion Fruit Daiquiri at the bar.
