Costa Rica’s northern province of Guanacaste is the country’s premier travel destination. Guanacaste is renowned for its birding and animal observation opportunities. The Guanacaste region is an area steeped in culture. The name is derived from the native word quahnacaztlan- the word for the Guanacaste tree- the national tree of Costa Rica.

Land of Folklore
This area is truly cowboy country! During colonial times, Guanacaste was part of Nicaragua, but decided to join Costa Rica on July 25th, 1824. This is the land of bull fights and rodeos- large cattle ranches are located in the lowlands, as well as sugar cane plantations and other agricultural pursuits. The pre-Columbians were well known for their beautiful pottery and amazing pottery and textiles can still be found at local markets throughout the region.

Getting there and away
The new Liberia International Airport Daniel Oduber in Liberia has made getting to Guanacaste much easier. But there are many other ways to make the trip!
