Cocos island in all it's splendor
Costa Rica annexed the Isla del Coco in 1869, but its distance from the mainland- nearly 300 miles- make it a place that few visitors and only a handful Costa Ricans have visited.  Jacques Cousteau called Island del Coco “one of the most beautiful islands in the world”.  Several companies offer cruise packages to this remote island, including ones specifically for divers and snorkelers.  Serious divers can enjoy 100 foot visibility and the underwater equivalent of a big game park!  The waters here are filled with scalloped hammerheads, white tipped reef sharks, bottlenose dolphins, manta rays, Galapagos sharks and huge schools of brightly colored fish. The fragile ecosystem that exists here supports several endemic fauna such as the Pacific dwarf gecko and the Cocos anole and over seventy endemic plant species. Stories of hidden treasure abound as this island was a favorite among early explorers.  Markings can be found on the stones surrounding the anchorage that show crude drawings done by sailors many centuries ago.

Cocos Island also has the distinction of being the location for the filming of Jurassic Park.  The wild and desolate beauty of this National Park made it the perfect location for this wild adventure.
