Getting there... finally!

The one thing that everyone hopes for after a long journey and getting lost many times is that there is a cool drink and a comfortable bed waiting for them. Le Cameleon does not disappoint. After a long shuttle bus from Arenal to San Jose with my mother, picking up my boyfriend and car and setting off for the Caribbean coast and the beautiful beaches of Puerto Viejo, I did not mean to go round in circles. But then who does?

What’s all the fuss about?

Every year, the Palmares festival takes over the lives of all in Costa Rica as they make their way by the busload to the small town of Palmares, just outside San Jose, looking for a good time. Costa Ricans are known for their party spirit; the attendance in my office was shocking during this week, as all day drinking, fairground, cowboys and free concerts were deemed more important than work. Me: "Why weren't you at work yesterday?" Guy: "Umm, because it was Palmares!" Oh. Obviously. Combining this overwhelming excitement for the fiesta with screams of "Tope! Tope!" at the mere mention of the P-word, I figured that I was going to have to go and check this out for myself. I had no idea what 'tope' meant - funnily enough, it had never entered my vocabulary during 4 years of Spanish at university but, when asked, the only answer people could give me was "Horses!” Again, obviously.

What should I pack?

For a small country, Costa Rica has tons of different weather conditions which make packing a challenge. That coupled with weight restrictions on flights within the country that are almost half of what you get on the larger airlines that you take from the states, can make the whole packing thing difficult. Just remember a couple of things- it is really not necessary to bring a lot of dressy things- this is a pretty casual country and you will save tons of space in your luggage.

Getting Married in Costa Rica?

What a great idea! Getting married in paradise! Lots of things to think about, but here are the few things that are required to make the whole thing legal and binding. If both parties are not Costa Rican, than the rules are that both parties must possess valid passports that will be current for at least six more months and a local attorney and notary must be present at the wedding. There is some paperwork that only a Costa Rican attorney and notary can complete to make the whole thing legal.

The Costa Rican government has gone to great measures to make sure that drinking water in Costa Rica is perfectly safe for visitors, but bottled water is available almost everywhere in case you are worried. Costa Rica is is definitely not Mexico, but there is al-ways a possibility that local bacteria in the water may upset your digestive tract as it could anywhere, so be careful of what you eat and drink is recommended.

Do I need an International driver’s license to drive in Costa Rica?

No, you do not need an International Driver’s License to rent or drive a car in Costa Rica. As long as you have a valid Visa, and your local driver’s license; your driving privileges are intact.
