Off the tourist track
If you are looking to experience something different in Costa Rica, off the main tourist track then I highly recommend a visit to the area of San Gerardo de Dota. This mountainous region is home to pristine cloudforests found no where else throughout the country. To get here, travel east from San José to the town of Cartago - Costa Rica' first capital. From here you'll ascend into some of the highest mountains found in Costa Rica known as the "Cerro de la Muerte". Not far from here you'll find Costa Rica's tallest peak, Chirripó - with nearly 13,000 feet - it is said that on a clear day you can see both oceans from the top!
